I like the way Ms. Forster chose to open the book. I was drawn into the story immediately and I could not wait to see what happened next. There were plenty of unexpected twists and turns to hold my interest and keep me turning the pages. I changed my mind a few times about who did what — and why — but I was blown away when the BIG secret was revealed...

Half-truths, lies, omissions and politics. Throw in a side story of domestic violence. This book will keep you guessing at what comes next and sometimes be close to predicting the outcome. Even so, the ending was still somewhat of a surprise to me. This is the third in the series. I read the first when it came out and still need to read the second. While it's not necessary to have read them in order, it will help to keep the main characters straight. I'm hoping for a freebie or .99 deal for the rest in the series! If not, I guess I will have to break down and buy the rest as I do really want to read the others!
I just recently discovered this author (thanks ! ), and am thoroughly enjoying this series. Rebecca Forster is a very engaging author and I've been hooked from page one of each book. The suspense draws me in immediately. The author gives just enough hints to keep me guessing until the end, or at least nearly the end. Always interesting to see if I've solved the mystery before the reveal.
I'm finally giving up on this series. Josie is a self absorbed cowboy who listens to no one and has little warmth. The writer overuses metaphors and attempts artsy writing and ends up with a sometimes flamboyant style with many superfluous words. When I guessed the big secret as I did in the last book, I decided to give up. A secondary story of spousal abuse served little purpose except to show Josie's bullheaded determination to do what she wants. In the last book I wondered how Josie and Archer could stand each other. In this one I wondered how he could stand her.
I am a huge Rebecca Forster fan, and I just love the Josie Bates series. It doesn't get any better. I've read through the entire series and eagerly look forward to the next one. These are great books. These books are loaded with a lot of legal wrangling, some very dramatic courtroom scenes, some truly gut-wrenching looks at the American legal system, the American criminal justice system, and the people who work in this system, every day of the week. Terrific books--the Josie Bates series. If you're anything like me, one will definitely not be enough! Grab the first one and curl up. You're in for an enjoyable experience!
Forster has kept the quality of her storytelling high, which isn’t always the case with series books.
This novel has plenty of twists in it but I figured out the main one early on.
I still wish Forster would give Archer a first name and tell us how he and Josie became lovers.
Several places in this book, a POV or location shift occurred but there was no break in the text to indicate it happening. I don’t know if they were download or formatting errors, but they threw me every time I ran into one.
I’ll be back for more of Josie’s adventures.
Josie Bates stories are just Great!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, though I wasn't as emotionally engaged as a reader, as I was with the earlier two. Those were Five Star for sure. The characters are well drawn, the dialogue is strong and to the point with a great depiction of courtroom tactics. Trust me on that, I covered the "Cops and Courts" beat on a daily newspaper for five years.
The action never stops and the plot kept me guessing right to the end. Maybe I should reconsider that last star!
Not to mention that the back story on Josie Bates has me so thoroughly hooked that the other four books are in my "to be read" pile.. Here's to Rebecca Forster for a full week or reading pleasure. No regrets the lost sleep at all.
