Sunshine and Ocean Waves is a collection of short stories Justin Murphy has adapted from poems he wrote for friends on Facebook. One story is "The Rainstorm" where a man pursues a reluctant singer to showcase her talents in a Paris café. Another involving the dragon who faced off against King Arthur telling his side of the conflict before resurfacing as a womanizer in Swinging 60s London. Other stories include an old cowboy dying just as a young astronaut takes flight, a chess match that turns violent. A couple of tales at the beach about tragedy and the loss of friendship and more.

The uniqueness of Sunshine and Ocean Waves by Justin Murphy – a collection of poems and short stories -- cannot be overstated. Author Murphy places a poem as preface to each short story. The reader is asked to read the poem, and after this reading, to see how the author, taking his own poem (like a painting) to weave a short story from the poem. I know an artist who painted a number of paintings, and then she made clothing to be placed alongside the paintings, clothes that were depicted in the paintings. That was similar in nature to what Murphy has accomplished in Sunshine and Ocean Waves. That idea of crafting a poem with the notion it would be expanded into a short story is very intriguing, and I believe serious readers would love this approach and wish to see how each poem is blown out into a full story. I did.I highly recommend the book with the caveat that the author turn it over to a good strong editor to pick through it for the occasional problem or typo. Many of the lines in the stories are what we call fragments but this is a choice of style used well by the author; we readers can get in line with this style of present tense, free-writing quickly and easily, despite its often cause for an abrupt transition between some lines. On the other hand, we ‘think’ in fragmented sentences, so on that level it works well. This stylistic choice, however, does not detract from the surprise endings, the twists we might well could have seen coming if we hadn’t been entranced by the story itself. Good use of dialogue and movement, action, character, mood, setting…all juggled very well. Here is an example of a poetic few lines preceding the story entitled Rainstorms:
You call yourself the Beautiful One,/Yet you do nothing about it./You talk about journeying around the sun./You sing a lot, but you’re nothing without it./
After four or five rhyming lines Rainstorm transforms from poetry to prose. The overall effect is mesmerizing. I highly recommend the book, and Murphy has a number of other Amazon titles you should also have a read from. Each poem with its corresponding short story draws the reader in and snares us! Enjoy the book; well worth the price and the journey.
